How to Choose Pharma E-Detailing Software: A Buyer's Checklist

The questions a pharma founder should ask before paying for a doctor detailing and MR management platform.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Software demonstrations can be impressive. Pages turn smoothly, charts look attractive and a dashboard shows dozens of tiles.

But the buying decision is better made around your team's day-to-day work and the features you can verify yourself.

What matters most

Choose the platform that handles your team's most repeated tasks with the least friction—not the platform with the longest feature checklist.

Before you decide
  • Test a real brand import and doctor call
  • Test an order from start to finish
  • Inspect company access and content controls
1Begin with three ordinary field tasks
2Check the management workflow
3Ask about offline behavior and limitations
4Understand your full commercial cost
01

Begin with three ordinary field tasks

Ask the vendor to show an MR opening a specific brand page during a simulated doctor call, entering a chemist order and finding an approved price. If the software cannot make these common jobs easy, secondary features are unlikely to rescue the experience.

Use the same test script with every shortlisted platform.

02

Check the management workflow

How does the company add users? Who can upload or change approved visual aids?

Can the administrator control which modules are visible to different members? What happens when an MR leaves the company or loses a device?

A field tool should be usable by MRs while preserving reasonable company control over access and information.

03

Ask about offline behavior and limitations

Do not settle for a statement that the software is 'offline enabled'. Ask which specific pages work offline, what must be downloaded first, whether the app must remain open, and how pending orders synchronize.

Try the workflow on a real phone or tablet with internet disabled. Offline capability is not all-or-nothing.

04

Understand your full commercial cost

Ask for the subscription duration, included Manager and MR accounts, visual-aid page limits, additional user charges, optional modules, support terms and renewal policy. Request written confirmation of taxes and any setup work.

A low advertised price may be attractive, but compare the actual configuration your company needs.

Practical checklist
  • Test a real brand import and doctor call
  • Test an order from start to finish
  • Inspect company access and content controls
  • Test offline behavior under realistic conditions
  • Get all charges and limitations in writing
Key takeaway

Choose the platform that handles your team's most repeated tasks with the least friction—not the platform with the longest feature checklist.
